Gimmicks

I’ve been mostly quiet this summer. Part of it has to do with working full time and chasing a very active child. But the other part was just me discovering who I am and what I want to write about.
Before I started writing, I read a lot of “mommy blogs”.  A lot of them. Everyone had their own little hook or gimmick that was theirs and theirs alone. In order for me to share my opinions and thoughts, I felt like I needed to have quirky things of my own.  I contrived weekly posts that while often were awesome and cool and meaningful, often fell short and smacked of a little cheese.

What I’ve realized is that I’m not a stereotypical “mommy blog”. I don’t have any advertising on my blog, nor companies pounding down my door to review their products. (Although I admit it’d be fun to review things from time to time) I don’t stay at home, I work full time with a 40 min commute either way.  You read this because either a) you’re family or b) you’re interested in what I have to say.

So no more gimmicks. Everything will be honest and thoughtful and sans cheese. Deal?

100 Posts

This is our 100th post. 100 is a very respectable number. 100 pennies equal a dollar! 100 $100 bills equals TEN THOUSAND dollars. See? 100 is a very nice number. (especially the latter. I wouldn’t mind 100 $100 bills.)

In the five months we’ve actively been blogging, we’ve had a great time. I’ve met some amazing bloggers and learned a lot from them. My writing has grown, too.

On this momentous occasion, I’d like to share some of our favorite posts so far. Some of these are our personal favorites and others are the most popular posts with YOU, our friends and readers!

Here’s a couple of interesting facts about YOU!

130 of you follow my blog through Google’s Friend service, over 100 subscribe to our feed and several more receive our posts through email. You come from 39 different countries speaking 29 languages! My friends from Bangladesh, Norway and Italy stick around the longest on each visit.

We love reading your emails and your comments!  You inspire us to keep writing. Here’s to 100 posts and many more to follow!

Since this milestone is almost as good as a birthday, let’s have some presents. These presents are for YOU!

Present #1:

Two cookbooks from my collection: Great-tasting 99c Recipes and Simply the Best Chicken. Both are packed with recipes to add something new to your dinner routine.

Present #2:

One Ball Knits Accessories, a skein of “Coton Del Borgo” 100% cotton and a skein of “Austermann” Persia 100% nylon yarn. I don’t talk about knitting much because I don’t have as much time to do it anymore, but I love yarn. I really love it. So it’s time to share some of that love!

If you’re of the persuasion, I hope you had a very lovely Easter weekend. Continuing in that theme, I’d like to kick off this WotW with Peeps. Lots and lots of Peeps. I think the day AFTER Easter is one of the best days… Peeps for 50% off!

Want to have your own Hobbit home? With the Hobbit film actually underway, Lord of the Rings fever is starting to rise again.

I’ve been over every inch of this site several times over the past couple of years. This is an ACTUAL house. You can build this house. I can build this house (well… if Jeff would let me, of course).

And while we’re on domestic matters, I’m TOTALLY in love with this apron.

Finally, I want you to fall in love with Juniper Moon Farms and their shepherd Susie.  Although I’ve never lived on a farm, I think I’d love to live at JMF.  Seriously.  It’s all I can do to keep from hopping in the car and visiting, even though I’ve never met Susie in person. I feel like I could belong there. The whole blog is my favorite thing to read every day.

Adorable. Adorable. Adorable.  Want a taste? This blog post will charm your pants off.

What’s got your eye this week?

Welcome to Wednesday On The Web – where we put together the cool/interesting/crazy things we’ve found lately.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With Lent upcoming, I noticed a lot of my finds in the last week or two are quiet, contemplative or thought-provoking.
For example….
Sinner? There’s an app for that.
One of my favorite finance bloggers posted this video as inspiration this week. I can’t help but continue to watch it over and over again.
If you liked that, there are other performances on YouTube that are worth watching.
This website charts out CO2 emissions, birth rates and death rates… as you watch. It’s a chilling reminder of our carbon output, and an interesting look at population.
Mad World has been coming up in my music rotation, and it strikes a chord. I listen to it on repeat sometimes.
I tend to get more reflective during this time of year and my tastes seem to reflect that.
To end on a lighter note, I was listening to the Daily Writer’s Almanac in the car the other day. At the end of the almanac, Garrison Keillor reads a poem. I actually had to stay in my car to finish, the poem was SO delightful. It’s titled “Daily I Fall in Love With Mechanics.” You can read it at the link, but it is best to click “Listen” and experience it for yourself.
That’s it for me this Wednesday… what’s got you fascinated this week?
